TechSmith: One Spartan’s Story

Dave McCollom, education evangelist at local screen capture and screen recording software company TechSmith (read “TechSmith: A Piece of Silicon Valley in Okemos” for more information on the company), graduated from MSU in 2003 with a degree in general business management. Today, he travels around the world promoting TechSmith products and ensuring that users have a positive experience with them—all from his home base at TechSmith’s headquarters in Okemos, Michigan (just down the street from campus, off of Jolly Road). Did you know that a major international software company is headquartered just down the street from campus, in Okemos? Well, you do now. It’s called TechSmith, and it was founded in 1987 by MSU alum William Hamilton, who is still the company’s president. According to their website, TechSmith is “the world’s #1 provider of screen capture and screen recording software for the individual and professional user.” (more…)

You want to add internship experience to your résumé, but you don’t want to wait until summer to do it. You have a 12-month lease and don’t want to try to find a sublessee, let alone lose money on the deal (trust me, you will), so you’re stuck in East Lansing for the next year. You need internship credit in order to graduate and your off-campus job isn’t career-related—or you may have an on-campus job that is career-related, but isn’t officially an internship. Problem solved: with the new(ish) Internships@State program, you can get valuable experience and learn what it’s like to work in your field of choice without leaving campus. Tom Castellani, computer science major from the class of summer 2009, worked as a programming intern for MATRIX, MSU’s Center for Humane Arts, Letters, and Social Sciences Online here in East Lansing. His for-credit internship lasted from December 2008 to May 2009, and he ended up working there this past summer. We interviewed him over the summer to get his story. (more…)
